Apple: Making an iPhone 8 Costs $10 More Than a 7 By Donna Fuscaldo | September 26, 2017 — 6:51 PM EDT

Apple Inc.’s (AAPL) iPhone 8 costs more than any other iPhone to make, but with the higher average selling prices, it should be able to maintain its history of healthy margins.
That’s according to IHS Markit, which did a teardown of the latest iPhone, finding that the iPhone 8 costs $247.51 to manufacture, which is close to $10 more than the iPhone 7. The iPhone 8 Plus, which boasts a larger 5.5-inch screen and 64 GB of memory costs the tech company $288.08 to produce, which is more than the $277.66 Apple spent to produce the iPhone 7 Plus. Still, the iPhone 8 is being priced at $50 more than its predecessor while the iPhone 8 Plus is $30 more than the iPhone 7 Plus. Apple is selling the iPhone 8 for $699 and the iPhone 8 Plus for $799. "The higher total BOM cost for the iPhone 8 Plus can't be tied to a single area or feature. The higher cost is the result of slower annual component cost erosion tied in with additional features," said Andrew Rassweiler, senior director of cost benchmarking services for IHS Markit, in a press release. “ “From a teardown perspective, the biggest cost adders would be the increased NAND flash memory content and new wireless charging components.” (See also: Apple: Slow iPhone 8 Sales May Not Be a Bad Thing.)
Justifiably More Expensive
The new iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus boast glass on both the front and back, aluminum bands that match the finishes and three colors: silver, space gray and a new gold finish. When Apple announced it on Sept. 12, it said the glass is the most durable ever on a smartphone and that it is both water and dust resistant. The iPhone 8 also include Retina HD displays, 3D-touch built in, dual cameras, stereo speakers that are 25% louder than the iPhone 7's and with deeper base. The iPhone 8 is also running off of Apple’s new A11 chip that the company claims is the most powerful and smartest chip ever found in a smartphone. According IHS Markit, the company’s new 64-bit A11 Bionic chip, wireless charging and the edge-to-edge glass all add to the cost of manufacturing.
Typically, when a company has to spend more to make a device, it takes a hit to its gross margins as customers balk at paying the extra cost. But this is Apple, which has long been adept at maintaining healthy margins even in the face of higher prices. As CNBC pointed out, while Apple is the No. 2 smartphone maker, behind Samsung Electronics (SSNLF), it is more profitable than any other smartphone maker. For the June quarter, gross profit margins were 38.5%, better than what Wall Street was looking for.
"Our expectation is that Apple will absolutely maintain healthy margins. Apple likes to create the best products and a good return on them," said Ian Fogg, head of mobile at IHS Markit, in an interview with CNBC. "What is remarkable about the iPhone is Apple has persuaded consumers to put more of their income towards their smartphone. At the same time, Apple has maintained historically excellent margins."
