Apple Unveils iPhone X, 8, New Watch, Apple TV 4K By Donna Fuscaldo | September 12, 2017 — 3:49 PM EDT SHARE After months of rumors, speculation and innuendos, Apple Inc. (APPL) launched its much-awaited iPhone X, iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, Apple Watch Series 3 with built-in cellular and Apple TV 4K, during a event at the Steve Jobs Theater on the company’s new campus. While all of the new devices are important to its growth prospects, all eyes were on the iPhone X, which Apple Chief Executive Tim Cook called the future of the smartphone and said will set the technology path for the next decade. The new X phone comes with a curved OLED display that fits edge to edge, top to bottom and with glass on both the front and back of the phone. To get the device working, users just have to tap on the screen now that the home button is no more. To get to the home screen, customers now have to swipe up from the bottom, which Apple is touting as easier and more intuitive. Its engineered to be water and dust resistant, has a super Retina display, dual cameras, a battery life that is two hours longer than the iPhone 7, wireless charging and comes in space gray or silver. Apple also rolled out Face ID on the iPhone X. In order to unlock the phone the user just has to look at it. Face ID learns the user’s face every time the he or she glances at the iPhone X and can detect a face even in the dark. The biometric tool also works with Apple Pay and third-party apps, noted the company. The IPhone X starts at $999. There will be a 64GB and 256GB versions available. Orders will start Oct. 27, and shipping will begin Nov. 3. iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus On the non-OLED front, Apple also unveiled the iPhone 8 and the iPhone 8 Plus. The devices boast glass on both the front and back, aluminum bands that match the finishes and three colors: silver, space gray and a new gold finish. The company said the glass is the most durable ever on a smartphone and that it is both water and dust resistant. The iPhone 8 also include Retina HD displays, 3D-touch built in, dual cameras, stereo speakers that are 25% louder than the iPhone 7's and with deeper base. The iPhone 8 is also running off of Apple’s new A11 chip that the company claims is the most powerful and smartest chip ever found in a smartphone. The six-core processor is designed to accelerate 3D apps and games. The device also comes with powerful camera technology that enables faster autofocus in low light, hardware enables multiband noise reduction and augmented reality, among other features that improves photos and videos. Thanks to the glass back, Apple said consumers can charge their new mobile device without having to plug in a cable. Apple will roll out third-party wireless chargers that will work with the new charging technology. The company also launched a wireless charging mat that works with all the devices dubbed AirPower. The iPhone 8 will sell for $699, while the larger iPhone 8 Plus will go for $799. Orders will start on Sept. 17 with the devices slated to ship Sept. 22. There will be a 64GB and 256GB versions of the iPhone 8 devices available. Apple Watch Series 3 On the watch front, the Cupertino, Calif., technology powerhouse launched the Apple Watch 3, which, as expected, has built-in cellular, which means users can use the Apple Watch to make calls, stream music and conduct other activities without having to be tether to the iPhone. On the health and fitness front, Apple included smart activity coaching, a redesigned workout app, new features for swimmers and a gym kit that enables users to tap gym machines and all the metrics syncing with the watch. As for its heart rate monitoring technology, Apple said it can now show the resting heart rate and will alert the user when the heart rate is elevated when the person doesn’t appear to be active. CEO Cook also said the Apple Watch is the No. 1 watch around the globe and has a 97% customer satisfaction rate. In addition to the new Watch, the company also rolled out new bands, in new colors, including a sporty one. The cellular Watch Series 3 will go for $399 while a version without connectivity is priced at $329. Apple is keeping the Series 1 but lowering the price to $249. Orders for the device begin Sept. 15 with availability starting Sept. 22. Apple TV 4K Apple TV may have not been the focus of many of the rumors heading into the event, but Apple did have some news in that area, namely the rollout of Apple TV 4K. With Apple TV 4K, the company said viewers will get crisper pictures, and graphics performance that is four times faster. It also announced it is working with all of the Hollywood studios to make their 4K movies available on iTunes as the same price as HD movies. For customers who downloaded a HD version of the movie, Apple will automatically upgrade it for free. The company also announced that Amazon and Netflix 4K movies will becoming to iTunes and that it is launching Live Sports and Live News. With Live Sports, when a user’s favorite team is playing on, say, ESPN, it will automatically appear in the up-next list. Users can get notifications about games that are about to start or that are close so the user can start watching it instantly. The Apple TV 4K is priced at $179, with ordering opening up on Sept. 15.
