Kramer | August 14, 2018 — 11:30 AM EDT SHARE (Note: The author of this fundamental analysis is a financial writer and portfolio manager.) Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD) has been one of the hottest stocks of 2018, with shares rising by about 95%. The good news, shares may be going even higher, perhaps by another 12%, based on technical analysis. Should that happen, the stock will be trading at prices not seen since 2006. The bullish chart stems from the company's improving fundamentals, after blowing out second-quarter results. Earnings estimates beat by more than 10%, while revenue topped estimates by about 2% on the strength of its Ryzen and EPYC chips. That has led analysts to increase their earnings and revenue estimates for the next two years. Additionally, a delay by Intel on one of its new chips may benefit AMD. Bullish Technical Chart The technical chart shows a stock exploding after reporting first-quarter results in April, followed by shares rising above resistance and breaking out around $13.50 in May. Shares followed that breakout with a period of consolidation, between $18.50 and $20. Now the stock is breaking out again, rising above resistance at $20, and that may trigger a rise to roughly $22.10, a technical resistance level dating back to 2006. The stock has started rising over the past few days on increasing volume, an indication that more buyers may be moving into the stock. Analysts Forecast Big Earnings Growth Analysts have increased their earnings estimates in 2019 by 2% and by nearly 8% for 2020 over the past month. The rising forecasts also increase the growth rates. Earnings in 2019 are now expected to rise by almost 33% from prior estimates for growth of 30.5%, and by 44.5% in 2020 from previous forecasts of 38.2%. AMD EPS Estimates for Current Fiscal Year Chart AMD EPS Estimates for Current Fiscal Year data by YCharts Revenue Estimates Climb Revenue estimates remain relatively unchanged for 2019 and are forecast to grow by about 9%. But the projections for 2020 improved by more than 6%, with revenue growth now expected to climb by almost 13%, up from prior growth expectations of 6.2%. AMD Revenue Estimates for Current Fiscal Year Chart AMD Revenue Estimates for Current Fiscal Year data by YCharts Analysts Still Not Convinced But all is not perfect for AMD, because the same analysts that are boosting estimates have an average price target on the stock of only $17.64, nearly 12% below the current price. Also, of the 32 analysts covering the stock, only 41% rate shares at buy or outperform. Not an overly bullish bunch. Should AMD continue to deliver better-than-expected results, and estimates continue to rise, then the stock can continue to work higher. But that also means that the more the stock rises, building higher expectations, the less room the company will have for error.
